Potential ice jams and flooding has prompted a warning as levels on both the Coldwater and the Nicola rivers have risen quickly since yesterday.
City officials warn there could be localized flooding or impacts from ice and debris affecting about 120 homes on the Coldwater.
People living along the Coldwater River or traveling through the area are on alert as the current ice jam and high river levels are expected to last until at least midnight tonight or longer.
Merritt's Emergency Operations Centre, now at Level One activation, is monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, people are advised to keep children and pets a safe distance from river banks and keep off the ice, which is NOT safe.
