After months of record-high illicit drug deaths in BC, the September numbers show a slight decrease.
In September, there were 127 suspected illicit drug toxicity deaths, which represents a 112% increase over September of 2019. However, the 127 deaths is a 15% decrease from a month ago when 150 people passed away.
The Interior Health Authority has now recorded 183 illicit drug deaths this year, already surpassing the 137 deaths recorded in all of 2019. In 2018 there were 246 deaths.
Broken down further, in the Thompson Cariboo Health Service Delivery Area, which includes the City of Merritt, recorded 8 illicit drug deaths in September and has now had 71 this year. That compares with 40 in 2019 and 84 in 2018.
